Staying a night in Downtown Calgary

If you would like to spend a night or two in Calgary we recommend the following:

We are far from being experts on the city of Calgary but we have stayed overnight more than once and here are some of our tips, tricks and favorite areas. 

The area that my wife and I would attempt to find a Hotel/Motel in if we were staying in Calgary is Downtown Calgary around Eau Claire Park over to the Stephen Avenue Pedestrian Walk.   I believe 8th Ave SW is where the pedestrian street is with lots of restaurants and stores; it is called the Stephen Avenue Walk – between First Street S.E. and Fourth Street S.W.

Here is a link to the public transportation system in that area:  http://www.calgary.ca/docgallery/bu/engineering_services/emaps/downtown.pdf.  In the area above the public transit is on 7th Ave SW should you wish to park your car at your hotel and then not have to worry about driving during your downtown stay.

To get out of the elements there is an in door pathway through the downtown buildings that is 15’ above the ground.  Here is a link to more information. 

If you want to make your way out of Calgary closer to Canmore then the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel & Suites at Bowridge Crescent is a place my wife has stayed at and would recommend (she keeps talking about their comfy beds).  There is nothing touristy around the area though, it is just on the way to Canmore.

Here is a link to a 3^rd party website that can help you find hotels in Calgary (enter the date you are staying near the top left of the page to find out which hotels have availability for the time you are looking for):  http://www.expedia.ca/pub/agent.dll?qscr=htfv.  I believe it defaults to 2 travellers and 1 room but you can update traveller details on the left side of the page.  That link is to hotels in downtown Calgary, which may extend a bit beyond the touristy area that we mention above; however, many of the hotel descriptions will mention where they are in location to the Eau Claire Market, Stephen Avenue pedestiran mall, etc.
