Manitoulin
Island is the largest fresh water island in the world. It is situated
on the northern edge of Lake Huron. Being part of the Niagara Escarpment
there are some spectacular scenic lookouts on the island. An angler
and hunters
paradise, a boater's dream. Recognized internationally for the abundance
of wild life, natural beauty and excellent sailing conditions. The island
has a permanent population of about 11000 people. At 2,766 square kilometers
in size it is 5 times larger than Toronto with less than 0.5% the population.
There are some
restaurants and shops to be found on the island but the main reason
for coming here is to enjoy nature or get away from it all. The area
has been the retreat of people who like privacy for a long time. Take
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, or Al Capone, for example, when they
wanted to get away this is one of the places they chose to come to.
